Joel Sarakula plays the love fool in soulful new single ‘Tragic’
On his new single “Tragic”, Joel Sarakula plays the tragic love fool straddling the thin line between over-confidence and self-pity with the lyric “your friends are laughing at the things that I’ve done, can’t take back the words I’ll admit that I’m dumb”.
“Tragic” is a song about embarrassment, awkwardness, self-acceptance and the ability of being able to laugh at oneself. It features an easy groove pinned down by slinky guitars, elastic basslines and steady drums but before he lets things get too easy, Sarakula introduces flourishes such as vibraphones and an analog synthesizer drenched in delay and full of 1970s pomp. Stylistically “Tragic” straddles soul, blues and disco and features a vocal delivery that echoes 1970s artists like JJ Cale and Boz Scaggs who swam in similar waters.
