The debut album by kiwi retro soul band Jamie and The Numbers
The debut album from hotly tipped and greatly anticipated kiwi band Jamie and The Numbers finally sees a release via Pete Brady’s Superfly Funk & Soul Records.
After years of limited run releases exclusively on 7” vinyl being fought over worldwide by collectors and fans, this superb LP is the culmination of years work for hugely gifted and voice of a generation Tongan-Kiwi Jamie Mavusa. Featuring both originals and well-known cover versions, there’s something for all fans of soul music on this LP which delivers on all promises and delightfully exceeds expectations.
With a reputation that’s slowly been growing over the past few years, with support from Craig Charles (Radio 6 Music), Eddie Piller (Totally Wired Radio) and Kurtis Powers (The Face Radio), fans of Jamie and The Numbers have been patiently waiting for this release.
Based in Wellington, New Zealand, Jamie Mavusa became well known for singing soul tunes for Tapestry Music Promotions at many of their Music Reviews and in her gospel choir at Church. It was at one of the Tapestry Music shows in Wellington that Jamie met Simon from Deltaphonic Records/The Numbers and after watching Jamie perform an amazing version of “Wade In The Water”, the rest is history.
The results of their collaboration are superb. From the incredible title track “You Don’t Love Me”, featuring a cameo from songwriter Robert Paladino himself, to Simon Bayliss’ future soul classic “Breeze”, frontwoman Jamie Mavusa navigates all the tracks with the ease of a seasoned soul singer displaying the full width of her impressive vocal range. A cover of The Style Council’s “Shout To The Top” demonstrates that her abilities are far beyond that of any soul singer, as she treats us to a delicate acoustic version of this classic song. Rewind just a few minutes earlier and you’ll have heard Jamie’s full vocal chops on “The Seeker”, the raw power of her voice on this track will simply blow you away.
