Menagerie are back with new single and video from upcoming album
2 years since their last full-length, Australian 9-piece Menagerie are back with new single and video “Free Thing”, which announces their highly anticipated third album “Many Worlds”, to be released January 15th 2021 on esteemed U.K label Freestyle Records.
Menagerie is the Melbourne-based jazz ensemble founded by producer, songwriter, guitarist, DJ and recording artist Lance Ferguson, also the driving force behind The Bamboos, Lanu, Rare Groove Spectrum and Machines Always Win.
“Free Thing” is the first single from their upcoming album and sees the band leaning heavily into the spiritual side of their sound. The hypnotic spoken word-poem is evocative of The Last Poets, an earthy yet futuristic meditation on the universal theme of freedom itself, set to a backdrop of insistent percussion, double bass and brooding piano voicings.
The video is directed by Gina Tratt, who says she was inspired by the composition’s emphasis on freedom of expression. “I sought to mirror this by creating a dialogue between Ramelle’s exploratory dance style and textured abstract animations, reflecting the narrative of the music as it shifts in intensity and feeling”.
“Free Thing” out Digitally on November 6th via Freestyle Records
