Fourth album ‘One Of These Days’ by funk outfit The Haggis Horns
With their fourth studio album “One Of These Days”, Leeds-based funk outfit The Haggis Horns once again provide a heavy dose of funk/jazz-funk dancefloor bangers but also add a nice mix of other genres; a proper disco/boogie gem, some sweet laid back 70s style soul and their first recordings with a rapper, Doc Brown who features on block party anthem “Take It Back” which was the first single, as well as on “What’s It All About” from this album.
Once again the band calls on their favorite female singer, Miss Lucinda Slim, who appeared on second single “World Gone Crazy” and sings vocals on disco-boogie scorcher “New York Beat”, as well as original Haggis vocalist since day one and Corinne Bailey Rae band member John McCallum, who features on the title track as well as “The Long Way”.
But the instrumentals hold their own as well. There’s a rockier guitar sound on this LP reminiscent of Dennis Coffey, especially on “Gonna Be Alright” and the aptly titled “All Fuzzed Up”. And let’s not forget the band’s love of naming songs after the national Scottish dish that gave them their name – the haggis. This time it’s slow rocky New Orleans type funk burner “Curse Of The Haggis”.
With “One Of These Days” this funk powerhouse from Leeds proves once again why The Haggis Horns are still on top after two decades….they write their own songs, they don’t follow the crowd, they stay ahead of the curve and they’re always willing to take musical risks. And long may it continue.
