What they say…
Christian John Wikane (Popmatters)
The forces behind Young Gun Silver Fox are Andy Platts and Shawn Lee. It was inevitable that two of the UK’s most prolific and versatile pop music linguists would one day collaborate on a studio project that crystallized many of their creative strengths. Together they fuse the talents they’ve mastered in their respective careers, from Andy‘s role as frontman and co-founder of Mamas Gun to Shawn‘s numerous self-produced projects with AM and his own Ping Pong Orchestra.
Andy Platts, the young gun of the duo, played on Corinne Bailey Rae’s hugely successful debut album and then, in 2006, landed his own publishing deal with Zomba Music. This led to collaborations with an extraordinary song-writing A-list that included Rod ‘Thriller’ Temperton, John Oates, Jed Leiber and former Gil Scott-Heron collaborator Brian Jackson. In 2007 he co-founded five-piece band Mama’s Gun for which he is the lead singer, composer and producer. Their first album “Routes to Riches” successfully broke them in Japan where they became the most played international artist on Japanese radio in 2009. They have since released two more album, “The Life And Soul” in 2011 and “Cheap Hotel” in 2014, and gone on to tour and perform all over the world, particularly broadening their profile in South East Asia. They have supported the likes of Level 42, Beverly Knight, Raphael Saadiq and Ben l’Oncle Soul.
Shawn Lee, the silver fox of this combo, is originally from Wichita, Kansas, but moved to London in 1995, where he recorded his infamous “Planet of the breaks” series as well as 5 volumes of “Ape Breaks”, becoming the most sampled drummer of his generation in the process. He went on to release various albums, “Monkey Boy” on label Wall Of Sound, followed by “Soul Visa”, and four albums of his instrumental project Shawn Lee’s Ping Pong Orchestra on Ubiquity. Tracks by The Ping Pong Orchestra have gone on to be featured in a plethora of TV series: Malcom In The Middle, Lost, Desperate Housewives, CSI: Miami, Ugly Betty, Boston Legal, Rodney, Damages, Good Morning America, in movies: Oceans 13, The Break Up, The Bank Job, Pool Hall Prophets, and in ads for BMW, Cinemax, Jaguar, Barclays, Exxon, Head & Shoulders and numerous skate, snowboarding & surf films. Shawn also has composed a soundtrack for Rockstar game Bully released in 2006.
An undeniable synergy informs Young Gun Silver Fox‘s maiden voyage, a full-length album titled “West End Coast” to be released on German label Légère Recordings. The music evokes some of the defining SoCal pop-rock classics of the 1970s and was recorded in Shawn‘s studio in the West End of London. The title represents both worlds, the strong sonic influence of the States but with a distinctly British touch. Marking the beginning of what is sure to be a fruitful collaboration, Andy Platts and Shawn Lee are now ready to present Young Gun Silver Fox to to the world!
