Soul Sugar releases new single ‘Just A Little Talk feat. Jolly Joseph’
Under the Soul Sugar guise, virtuoso organist, producer and multi-instrumentalist Guillaume Metenier continues to serve up wonderfully authentic musical meditations on classic dub and reggae-infused songs and instrumentals – often with the assistance of a close circle of collaborators and guest vocalists.
That much is evident from Metenier’s latest Soul Sugar single, “Just a Little Talk”, which is the titletrack of his upcoming new album scheduled for release in March 2024. The song is a languid, sun-baked chunk of conscious roots reggae sweetness featuring sublime, Junior Marvin-esque lead vocals from Jolly Joseph, one half of BAT Records studio stalwarts Dub Shepherds. The song also features drums by Jahno, recorded at his own N.O.F Studio near Metenier’s home city of Clermont-Ferrand.
Fittingly, Joseph and Dub Shepherds partner Dr Charty have provided the accompanying dub mix, making the most of their all-analog studio and deep knowledge of dub-wise Jamaican ‘version’ mixes of the 1970s and early ‘80s. Smothered in vintage effects – tape delay, space echo and so on – their revision is the kind of spacey, skeletal dub that would once have been associated with original masters of the style such as Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, King Tubby and Errol Thompson. Warm, bass-heavy and thoroughly intoxicating, it’s a superb alternate take.
